Everyone knows that citrus oils can brighten even the cloudiest day, and lavender has the power to melt away stress in the most frantic moments. We choose our oil, and in doing so, we shape our experience.

But what many don’t realize is that emotions play a crucial role in how we think, feel, and respond—every single day. Much of our emotional responses are programmed from early experiences and stored in the subconscious mind. Ever wonder why certain actions or words from others push your buttons? In emotional coaching, we call that a trigger.

The way we react to a situation—whether positively or negatively—is shaped by past experiences because emotions are directly tied to our senses. In fact, our sense of smell is wired directly to the brain, which is why a scent can instantly trigger a memory or emotional response. The same can happen when we see or hear something familiar.

This is why understanding emotions and how they affect the limbic system is so important—especially when using essential oils for emotional healing and release.


There are over 300 essential oils that support emotional well-being. While blends are often the easiest choice, healing is never a one-size-fits-all process. If you only have single oils—trust your intuition and choose what resonates with you.
