Before my son left for the Army, his recruiter kept asking one question: “ARE YOU SURE?” He knew the good, the bad, and the ugly—and still chose to serve. What if we gave people that same space before asking them to follow Jesus? Drawing from my son’s enlistment and my own reluctant yes to God, I explore what it means to count the cost of discipleship, why a rushed decision deserves a second look, and how seeing Jesus as King changes the commitment we’re inviting people to make. A soldier doesn’t wake up wondering whether he’s a soldier. He knows who he is, and moves accordingly. But what happens when we say yes to Jesus? Through the quiet confidence and humility of the soldiers in my family, I explore a question we may be overlooking: Has our identity shifted from getting saved to being a disciple of the King?
