Emotional Fitness: Why Healing Isn’t a One-Time Goal

Updated: Sep 3

In a goal-oriented society, emotional healing can feel like it doesn’t fit the mold. Everyone wants a neat 5-step solution. But here's the truth: emotional healing isn’t a one-time destination—it’s a lifelong practice, much like physical fitness.

Even if you’ve made huge strides, even if you’re the emotional equivalent of a gym bro, you still need to work it out.

The Problem with “Getting There”

We tend to approach emotional growth like a checklist:

  • I want to stop feeling anxious.

  • I want to feel peaceful.

  • I want to be over this grief.

So we write goals. We make plans. We map out timelines. And while that’s not inherently bad (I even build season-specific emotional protocols for my clients using Inner Voice Analysis), the mindset needs to shift.

Why? Because every emotional “win” often peels back another layer.

It’s a Journey, Not a Cure

When my clients experience relief from a current emotional burden, that’s not the end. It’s just a clearing of space so the next layer can surface. Usually it takes a few weeks—or months—but eventually something else pops up.

We live in a trauma-riddled world. Whether it’s a soul trigger or an unexpected grief flash, something will call your heart back into the work.

And when it does? You’re not back at square one. You're stronger now. More emotionally fluent. Better equipped.

Emotional Fitness Mirrors Physical Fitness

Even the fittest people still deal with cravings, stress eating, and weak spots. The discipline is in the ongoing maintenance, not in “arriving.”

And just like physical fitness, your emotions affect your physical body:

  • Chronic lung issues? Could be old grief.

  • Lower back pain? Maybe you’ve been feeling unsupported.

  • Headaches? Sure, drink water—but also check your anxiety and crown alignment.

  • Knee pain? Fear of moving forward often hides here.

If we cover physical symptoms with medication and skip the emotional check-in, we’re setting ourselves up for deeper problems later on.

The Need For Emotional Check-Ins

You brush your teeth every day. You move your body. Why wouldn’t you check in with your emotions regularly?

💭 Ask yourself: What am I feeling today? Is there grief, stress, or heaviness that’s gone unacknowledged?

💭 Have I taken this emotion to the Lord, or just vented it into the atmosphere?

Weekly is a minimum. Daily is ideal.
