You Can't Want it More For Them

Let me explain something that may save you years of exhaustion.

People don’t change because you asked nicely.

They don’t change because you finally found the perfect words.

They don’t change because you cried, pleaded, explained yourself for the hundredth time, or carried the emotional weight for both of you. And they certainly do not change because you sacrificed your own peace trying to make their life easier.

Outside pressure has never been a reliable source of character change.

Real change is an inside job.

The Exhausting Trap of Managing Everyone Else

Many of us spend far too much energy trying to manage other people’s growth.

We become experts at:

  • Explaining ourselves.

  • Predicting reactions.

  • Preventing conflict.

  • Carrying responsibilities that aren’t ours.

  • Hoping that if we love hard enough, sacrifice enough, or wait long enough, they’ll eventually become different.

And somewhere in all of that, we neglect ourselves.

Our own healing.

Our own peace.

Our own growth.

Because we secretly yet not so subtly believe that if they would just change, then we could finally rest. But peace doesn’t come from controlling someone else’s journey. Peace comes from learning to stay in your own lane.

Stay In Your Lane, Baby

Do your work.

Heal your stuff.

Learn boundaries.

Become healthier.

Grow.

Find peace.

Not because other people deserve the best version of you.

Because you deserve to live free.

Because God never asked you to carry responsibility for changing another human being.

Free will is a beautiful gift, one that we all have. We cannot force someone else to use their free will to do our bidding and wishes. Sometimes, those we love the most choose differently than we would want or even hoped for them. It's not our responsibility to make them choose what we think is "correct". That's God's job.

Not Everyone Is Going Where You’re Going

As you grow, shifts happen, and when they do, some folks will rise to your level and others won't. It is no fault of anyone; it just is what it is.

You become healthier, conversations deepen, and you find that relationships become richer. Some people don't enjoy or even want that. Again, this is ok.

You didn't fail them. And yes, you very likely loved them enough. They just weren't ready to go where you're growing.

Growth requires willingness, and willingness cannot be forced.

Stop Waiting for Someone Else to Give You Permission to Live

One of the saddest things I see is people putting their entire lives on hold while waiting for someone else to change.

Waiting for a spouse to become emotionally available.

Waiting for a parent to finally understand.

Waiting for an apology.

Waiting for a child to make different choices.

Waiting for someone to become who they wish they were.

And while they're waiting, they stop living.

Friend, you don't have to postpone your path until everyone around you gets healthy. Frankly, that's a death sentence.

You don't have to drag people into healing.

You don't have to convince someone to want better.

You don't have to spend your life hoping another person will become your project.

You are allowed to grow.

You are allowed to heal.

You are allowed to enjoy your life.

Even if someone else chooses not to.

Run Your Race

Keep becoming.

Keep healing.

Keep pursuing peace.

Keep letting God do His work in you.

Learn to trust Him with the idea that no matter who rises with you or falls without you, you're going to be alright. My dear, your peace was never supposed to depend on somebody else's willingness to change.

Stop carrying.

Stop waiting.

Run your race.
