Why Supplements Matter More Than You Think

As any good writer does, I sat with this topic for a while. My thoughts weren’t just about what supplements are or how they work—but why we should even consider them in the first place.
Some people need the what. Others are all about the how. But for those of us who need the why, this post is for you.
The Practical Side: Why Supplements Are Necessary
Let’s be honest—our soil isn’t what it used to be. Decades of farming, pesticides, and environmental changes have stripped the earth of essential nutrients, which means the food we eat today isn’t as nutrient-dense as it once was.
In a perfect world, our diet would provide everything our bodies need to function at their best. We’d get:
B vitamins from peas, nuts, and eggs
Vitamin C from strawberries
Lycopene from tomatoes
Antioxidants from berries
But here’s the reality: Even with the best intentions, most people don’t eat a perfectly balanced diet. We’re busy, we’re distracted, and let’s be real—sometimes, we just don’t want to eat a plate full of leafy greens.
On top of that, even if we did, our food supply lacks the nutrients it once had. That means our bodies often miss out on the vitamins and minerals they need to thrive.
So, if you’re okay with dull skin, low energy levels, and brain fog, then maybe supplementation doesn’t sound necessary. But let’s take a different perspective—one that goes beyond just basic health.

The Bigger Picture: Your Calling, Purpose, and Destiny
What does your life’s purpose have to do with taking supplements?
Everything.
Whether you realize it or not, you were created for a specific purpose. You have a calling, and your destiny is waiting.
But here’s the thing—fulfilling that calling requires energy, stamina, and mental clarity. If your body is running on empty, how can you show up as your best self?
Think about it:
If you’re called to shape the next generation, you’ll need endurance—not just for your career but for your family, friends, and community.
If your purpose involves making critical decisions, advocating for justice, or leading others, mental clarity is essential. That means giving your brain the fuel it needs.
If you’re a writer, speaker, teacher, or entrepreneur, your ability to inspire others is directly tied to your ability to think clearly and maintain momentum.
Most of us don’t think about health and wellness in terms of our purpose. But when you start to see your body as the vehicle that carries you toward your destiny, suddenly, taking care of it becomes non-negotiable.
A New Perspective on Supplements
Most people hear, “Take supplements because our food is depleted, and they help you live longer.”
Honestly? That’s not very motivating.
My grandmother never took supplements, ate a diet that wouldn’t be considered “healthy,” and still lived to be 86. So if the only reason to take dietary supplements was to extend life expectancy, I probably wouldn’t be that interested either.
But taking them so I can:
Run and play with my future grandchildren
Stay up late to pray over my family and my community
Write, create, and inspire future generations
That’s a different story.
Your why for taking health supplements will be unique to you. But one thing is certain: You have a calling. And if you’re not physically up for the task, you could miss it.
Don’t let that happen. Your life is too valuable.
Taking care of your body, mind, and spirit is one of the most important things you can do. The right nutritional supplements can help fill in the gaps where diet alone may not be enough.
