Consider the Butterfly

Updated: Aug 7, 2024

Did you know a butterfly will hide when it rains? Typically they go to where they go at night. You see, a butterfly must look for shelter from rain when the skies start to grow dark. If they are in rain, the water may cause their wings to get too wet and at best, they won’t be able to fly & at worst it may damage the wings of the butterfly. They’ll cling to the undersides of leaves, climb deep into tall grasses, or tuck themselves into cracks of rocks or trees. The last bit I find very interesting.

Listen to this blog here.

You see we often use butterflies as symbols for one another, something of encouragement to trust the process of transformation in our lives. Or even as a testimony to fly like a butterfly, fly so high!

But rare is it that we mention to one another a butterfly hides in a rock when a storm is APPROACHING. They know when it’s coming, the can see the signs of darkness approaching.

The metaphor is not lost on me, I’m praying you catch it as well.

The butterfly doesn’t stand in the storm claiming they can take it, admonish themselves to have faith and withstand the storm. They fly quickly to shelter for protection from the storm.

They rest.

They quiet down until the storm has past.

Monarchs, are a different breed, however.

These beauties do not need to stay completely dry. If they happen to get wet, they simply remain still until the water evaporates off their body.

If we are going to keep using the butterfly analogy, let’s use the whole thing.

Let’s start a movement of strategic rest in storms.

Most of all, when we are in a storm of life, or we see a dear friend in a wicked storm, let’s encourage them to rest.

Let’s bless them with shalom, peace, be still…

What a stunning power pose that would be.
